I still knit a bit

I finished another Wonderful Wallaby.
I changed the neckline because I didn't have enough yarn for a hood or even a collar.
The little rolled edge looks just fine.
I like to use Encore for all my kids' clothing. It washes up so well!

I know there hasn't been a Saturday Sky post for a long time, but there wasn't anything to show.

Anadama Bread

I had to try the bread posted by Mel on his blog, Cabezalana. It smells great and the pan pickin's were wonderful so I know it will be great with dinner.
Thanks, Mel!
PS. His is much prettier.

Saturday Sky

It was bright and windy today.
We spent the day looking for an audio component tower.
Larry couldn't find anything he liked in any of the stores we visited, so we ordered online.
It will be perfect!

Soup's On!

Please click on the picture to see that February is Soup Month. And you can play too. This is my contribution!

This is a recipe that we just tried for Larry's birthday. It's pretty mild, so the children ate it. The people who like it hotter just added a little Tabasco.

Everyone seemed to enjoy it (at least there were no audible complaints!) Let me know what you think.

Enjoy!

Crazy Vegetarian Chili

Initial Sauté:
2 large onions
2 medium carrots
3 stalks celery
1 tsp each of dried basil and dried oregano
1 bay leaf

4 cups mixed beans, eg kidney, pinto, black, adzuki
3 1/4 cups canned chopped tomatoes

Spices:
1 tbsp mild chili powder
2 tbsp ground cumin
1/2 tbsp Hungarian paprika
1 tsp turmeric
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground coriander
1/4 tsp Chinese 5-spice powder
1-2 green chilies, heat to taste (optional)
1 qt vegetable stock
hot pepper sauce to taste (optional)

Seasonings:
1 tbsp cider or white wine vinegar
6 tbsp tomato puree
Salt and freshly-ground black pepper to taste
Sweetener of choice, to taste (optional)

Vegetables:
2 (sweet bell) peppers, of different colors if possible
2 medium zucchini
8-15 cloves garlic
2 cups canned sweet corn, or equivalent frozen unthawed

Chop the onions, carrots and celery into small dice. Sauté them in a large pan, either in vegetable stock, or using sunflower oil if you prefer, for 5 minutes. Add the basil, oregano and bay leaf, and cook, stirring. Add the drained beans, and the undrained tomatoes. Mix in the spices along with vegetable stock. Simmer for 40 minutes over low heat, stirring occasionally.

Add the seasonings. Cook over low heat for 10 minutes, then taste and sweeten with sugar, maple syrup, or anything else, if you think it needs it. Now simmer for a long time - about 2 hours more perhaps. While this is happening, prepare the vegetables - chop the (sweet bell) peppers; quarter the zucchini lengthways and slice; finely chop or crush the garlic; and drain the sweet corn if using canned. Don't thaw frozen sweet corn yet though. Add the peppers and zucchini about 40 minutes before you're going to stop cooking it, and the garlic and frozen sweet corn about 10 minutes before the end. Don't add canned sweet corn until you're about to serve or freeze, then just give it enough time to heat through.

Second Annual Brigid in Cyberspace Poetry Reading

MY BOOKS

Author Unknown

I love my books
They are the homes
of queens and fairies,
Knights and gnomes.

Each time I read I make a call
On some quaint person large or small,
Who welcomes me with hearty hand
And leads me through his wonderland.

Each book is like
A city street
Along whose winding
Way I meet
New friends and old who laugh and sing
And take me off adventuring!

The sky is really a big dark cloud and there are little snow flakes floating through the air. The wind is going to be a big deal today. I'm planning on just staying in and working on my examples for the class I am teaching. Maybe I should work on the mittens for me. Have a good Saturday!

Walk to Cure Diabetes

I know this is a little short notice, but we will be Walking to Cure Diabetes on Saturday, January 20. If you are so inclined, please click on the logo and donate whatever you can.

With your help, we are moving research from the laboratory bench to the patient's bedside, translating scientific advances into longer, healthier lives for those with diabetes. With your help, we are moving closer to our goal...a cure for diabetes and its complications.

Thank you!
Cathy

Saturday Sky

This picture looks like we are having a blue sky, but it is just a flat grey.
Which makes me ask a spelling question: grey or gray?
Let me know!

First '007 Saturday Sky

I thought the sun was supposed to be behind the clouds all day, so when it peeked out I snapped this picture.
I hope it stays out a little longer. I could use a little solar power today ;-D

Saturday Sky ;-D

These pictures made me think of holiday decorations. I don't decorate like this, but I would like window clings that looked like these.

The REAL Explanation: On December 22nd, at 0022 Universal Time the Sun reached its southernmost point in Earth's sky marking the final season change for the year 2006. In celebration of the Solstice, consider these images of the Sun from an extreme ultraviolet telescope onboard the Stereo Ahead spacecraft. Recorded on December 4th, Stereo's first day of imaging, each false-color view highlights atomic emission in different temperature regimes of the upper solar atmosphere; 2 million kelvins in yellow, 1.5 million in green, 1 million, in blue and 60 to 80 thousand in red. The Stereo Mission will place twin spacecraft, launched together in October, into different solar orbits to conduct a three dimensional exploration of the Sun and the solar environment. After completing lunar swingby maneuvers, the A spacecraft is intended to orbit the Sun "Ahead" of planet Earth, and the B spacecraft "Behind".

Gotta love it!

The first picture was taken at 2pm and the second at 3pm.
I love Minnesota!

Saturday Sky from Long Ago

This is the sky on the day that we moved from Nebraska to Minnesota.
In May 1983, we packed up and drove from Bennington to Bloomington.
In June 1983, we finished the trip, all the way to Maple Grove ;-D
Ten days in a motel with four little boys. You do the math!!!

This was our "Welcome to Minnesota" Sky. A little intimidating, but pretty!

Here are the little angels who were trapped with me in a Howard Johnson's in 1983.
They are all full grown now (not necessarily grown-up!).

Warm Hands!

It has been quite a while since I have posted anything, but life just gets in the way sometimes.
I have been on a knittin' mitten mission. There are even a few more that are done, they are just in the other room and I'm not going to get them right now.
Gotta love Warm Hands!
